The Space

that way! that way!

Jan 26, 2025

I am a little late in writing this weeks post as the weather was bad and my son asked me if I could drop him to work. All would have been fine except that...

We were on a roundabout and the googlemap instructions were pretty clear. Then my son loudly said 'That way! that way!' I missed the junction and had to go around the roundabout again. In the end he was only a few minutes late to his destination but not late for work if you get what I mean.

That experience made me think... how often do we hear 'that way, that way' and end up going off course? I had a map, I didn't know the way I was going but had a clear destination and directions to take me there. However, it was the 'that way, that way' that took me/us off course. We still got there on time, but we also took a detour.

The point is that we still made it to the destination but we didn't know how we were going to get there until the journey was completed.

Read that again if needed...

We still made it to the destination but we didn't know how we were going to get there until the journey was completed.

Often leaders of all sorts are clear on where they want to get to, they know their destination but it is the 'that way, that way' (or an alternative that has a similar impact) which takes us off course. So the time to get there takes longer.

Now, the time it took to get around the roundabout was in less than a minute BUT it felt like a lot longer...

Why?

Because of what is happening in our minds... that redirection puts us off course, it means that we are distracted, we are trying to work out where we are going. In that moment by focusing on the challenge at hand then we can go back on track.

I invite you to to think about where you might go off track in the next quarter?

What do you need to get back on track?

Sometimes its a thought, a discussion with a friend or working with a coach. Sometimes its spending a little time working on yourself. And it is with that in mind that I invite you, for the last time to February 2025's 'The Courage to Belong' retreat. Registration closes on 31 January and there are only 2 spots left after which we will open a waitlist. Spend a few days with me so that you know how to respond when someone or something is taking you off course.

Until next week, all my best,

Saiyyidah
