the land we are on

Feb 02, 2025

A few pictures of Essaouria... #7 is a Citroen 2CV, my first car! #5 is the kitchen of a small cafe we had the best couscous and chops in!

Have you ever thought about the impact on you of the land you are situated on?

A couple of things happened to me in the last 10 days that really made me think about this.

First, I attended a day of systemic constellations as a participant. If you don't what this is then let me say it is a method of personal and professional development that enables you to understand and explore your place in the systems you are in, your family history, and your experiences. This process was so powerful for me that I learned how to do it and integrate it into my work and courses.

During the day of constellations the facilitator said something that struck me... she said that the land you are located on has an impact on you. And I thought 'of course it does'! What does this statement make you think of? Where do you go with it?

I started to reflect on my being born in London, raised in London, growing to be an independent adult in Glasgow, and then returning to London to heal (after my car accident).

Second, last week I went to Essaouria in Morocco. It is one of my favourite places in the world, a place where I can feel at ease and almost immediately at peace with myself and the world. I had a work meeting that was optional and I decided I would attend this because it would help me discuss a couple of projects I have been working on.

There was something different about how I felt at the end of the meeting and I knew I was going to spend some part of the holiday wondering what the difference was and I did that in an authentic Moroccan hammam and a massage.

I realised that the reason I felt different during the work meeting was because I felt more relaxed in the land I was located in. I lived in Essaouria for a while about 10 years ago so it always feels like a home from home. It is also a place where I can be completely myself without having to think of how others are perceiving me... that was the mood I took into the meeting. And it felt different. And it is something I am going to be more conscious of continuing now that I am back in London.

My invitation to you is to spend a few minutes thinking of the land you are on, is it your home, is it at work? Is it the land you were born in or is it a place where you have moved for love or work?

How does the land you are on make you feel?

These questions are all to do with how you feel in your own skin, and in your being.

And it all goes back to that foundational belonging question - who are you and how do you want to be?

As we go into the month of February, I give you an invitation to think about where you are physically located and the impact it has on you.

Have a great week!
